Jumped two inches higher than last year
Ram junior Megan Durbin, defending state champion in the girls Class 3A high jump, placed second at the co-ed state and field meet at Drake Stadium Thursday.
Durbin cleared the bar at 5′ 7″ on her first attempt, but missed all three attempts at 5′ 8″. Last year, it was a jump of 5′ 5″ that earned Durbin the state championship.
Maria Gorham of also North Polk cleared 5′ 7″ on her first jump, and then cleared 5′ 8″ on her second jump to place first. She was third in the high jump last year.
The state record in the 3A girls high jump is 5′ 7-1/4″.
Freshman Carter Morton placed 18th in the boys Class 3A high jump. He cleared the opening height of 5′ 10″ on his first attempt but missed all three attempts at 6′.
The winning height in the boys high jump was 6′ 7″ with Blair Brooks of Marion as champion. Cameron Cantrall of Spencer also cleared the bar at 6′ 7″, but Brooks is champion because he had no misses until 6′ 8″, while Cantrall missed once at 6′, twice at 6′ 6″, and once at 6′ 7″ before making his second attempt.
Senior Olivia Hansen finished 19th in the girls 200 m preliminaries with a time of 26.71. The fastest time in the preliminaries was 24.61. The top eight runners qualify for Saturday’s finals.
